Sad news hit my desk today as I researched something else. Longtime cycling advocate, planner, and all around good guy Ralph Fertig of Santa Barbara, CA died suddenly of a stroke while undergoing chemotherapy. Met Ralph for the first time at the 1998 Pro Bike/Pro Walk in Santa Barbara, which was largely a Ralph Fertig promotion. Go for a ride for Ralph, and then do something good for cycling.

Thanks, Chandra. Ralph was more a cycling advocacy colleague than personal friend, but you couldn't get much warmer than Ralph as far as humans are concerned. We wrote from time to time, but I never forgot that he was everywhere with a smile during the Santa Barbara Pro-Bike/Pro-Walk. As Andy Clarke posted me, "Ralph was truly one of the nicest people in the business."
